Pine Mountain is Proud to be a
National Ski Patrol YAP Best Practices Accredited Program!

The YAP program is a volunteer, educational program providing an opportunity for young adults to learn skills around ski safety and injury prevention, emergency care and response, skiing and snowboarding, ski patrolling, and leadership.

The Young Adult Patroller (YAP) program offers some unique opportunities for growth for students. They will each take an extensive course in first aid called Outdoor Emergency Care. The class generally runs around 100 hours and teaches many of the same life-sustaining measures that EMT’s use on an ambulance. It is, however, not credentialed to allow a student to take the National Registry exam needed for EMT’s.

The YAP patrollers will be taught how to package and move patients from our hill. They also receive extensive ski or snowboard instruction from our many instructors. We do ask that they have prior skiing/snowboarding experience to the intermediate or higher level. If someone lacks this experience, they may participate but completion of the hill training will require much more diligence.

This is a volunteer opportunity and depending on your school's requirements, may be counted toward volunteering hours. The hill provides many benefits including annual passes and meal stipends. There are also many growth opportunities provided throughout the region at other hills. Pine does require all patrollers ski a minimum of 12 shifts per year (day and night count as separate shifts) but will cover national dues ($90) for anyone patrolling 15 or more shifts.

Upon completion of the OEC and Hill Training, patrollers may use their credentials to patrol at the majority of the ski hills around the country. For any college-bound students, this is a great benefit as many cannot afford to ski during these years.

This would be a great opportunity for any students that may be considering a career in the military, medicine or public safety. Many of our patrollers are currently practicing  EMT’s and Paramedics. Our experience may be a great benefit as these young adults establish their career aspirations.
